I know that it is tempting to use your smart phone to it's fullest potential, but seriously.. no!! The AT is a rare opportunity to get away from what we 'know' and reconnect with nature. Use a guide...
I wouldn't worry too much about three bears, after a few days in the woods you'll smell so bad that nothing will want to eat you. Seriously though, It's a non issue... Those shelter mice on the other...
I think you might have problems with condensation and a wet sleeping bag.
Probably is one somewhere. A better question is, why would you want to carry a 44lb load? Rather than look for a new pack I would take a serious look at my gear, and try to cut the weight by a half....
Take a look at Six Moon Design tents, they're not too expensive and really light. I have that sleeping bag, you'll need a warmer one. The insulated Big Agnes mats can't be beat, the Thermo is ok but...
I would do an Iron Mountain/AT loop. You could preplan the distance or just play it by ear, the trails parallel each other with many points to cross between the two.
I object to all that's been said so far... don't even think it
Quite a few in Damascus this weekend.
Bears have a very keen sense of smell and follow it to food.
If they ate things that stuck out from their natural surroundings then they'd probably eat us instead.
Forget the sheets and just hang...
As a runner I'd say a stretch after hiking each day will do the most good, but anything is better than nothing.
Don't like the feel of the cork handles but I do like the anti-shock spring things, they really seem to help when I climb a steep incline.
Im 43 and been hiking since I was a teenager and wouldn't hesitate to let an adult male hike alone.
Go for the pumpkin head look, wear a blaze orange hat, it works from every angle. I also use one of those highway workers vests on my pack just because they weigh almost nothing.
As a fan of Yogi the Bear I am personally offended that you would name an act of begging after my hero!!!
Depends upon how well ventilated the tent is.
Don't fall into the trap of using the tent to stay warm when it gets cool outside, the tent's purpose is to shelter you from rain, mosquitos etc. and...
I think 2lb per day is too much, I take an average of 1 1/2lb per day and always have left over food. MRE's are disgusting. Either make your own dehydrated meals or try 'Pack Lite Foods' which are...
Not that it matters but how about Hillwalking.
White gas and the 22oz bottle.
I'll usually boil a couple of cups water in the AM for breakfast and tea, and the cook in the PM (plus the tea of course). The 22oz of fuel would last probably about...
I think it was 1986 in Clarence Fahnstock State Park in NY.
Sounds like your problem is more of a lack of air circulation in the back area. A properly fitted and well designed pack should have an air space between it and your back, if you cannot reach behind...
How about a small head of garlic, nothing like some fresh garlic to spice up a bland meal. Or am I the only one?
Do yourself and eveyone else on the trail a favor and leave the blowgun at home. You'll only make enemies on the trail and possibly get arrested in the process, I don't have a particular love for...
Lots of spiders in the shelters if you sleep in them, best to tent nearby and just use the shelter for socializing. I solved the spider problem by letting someone leave the shelter befor I did, I...
Hey Trail Ronin, I love your avatar I must have watched it laughing for about a minute befor I snapped out of it.
