Hi JNI64. I've slowed down a lot since the Covid pandemic. The biggest problem is the knees. The wife tells me to go out on day hikes but that cant' compare to the 2 or 3 weeks at a time along the...
Thanks for your memory. I remember staying there a few times. Once a rainy wind night. The place had it's own special personality. And it did feel a bit precarious.
In the late 70s, was there a shelter south of Straton pond after crossing the Straton Arlington road? It was replaced by the new Straton Pond Shelter. Also, a shelter going north just down from the...
I've paid The Long Trail Inn to park my car there a few times for a few weeks at a time. Felt safer than across the road where the trail comes down. If it isn't a busy season, I'd give them a call.
when I did the sobo EtoE a while back, around the same time you are planning, I had no problems with shelter space. The weather was nice and crisp, and the leaves just starting to change as I walked...

I did an E2E a while back. Left SOBO the middle of September. No bugs; nice crisp weather for hiking (low humidity); almost beautiful foliage (a week or two early); not crowded, especially the...
Lee Ma. north to Dalton is a nice easy hike , with a shelter midway at October mt. And there's parking at the Lee end.
Second what kevperro says. Im in a similar situation after heart surgery. I plan to start slowly with the gear that I have and add/change if things work out.

I think that time of year you'll meet enough people to keep things interesting but it wont be over crowded. The north will be a bit emptier, But its a beautiful time to hike so others will be there.
I have left my car at he Inn or across the street with no problems. A few times I paid the Inn a small fee for parking in their lot
This is a beautiful hike. And once you are up there, it's a great walk.

If you go SOBO, you wont know that he Northern part is harder until you get to the southern sections. And then it's too late to complain or negatively compare. Plus, you will finish on winged feet....
about the only time I wish I had gaiters was when walking thru nettles.
