My wife and I use a Simmerlight as our winter stove with good success and alcohol stove during the other 3 seasons.
I've had good success using Barge Cement.
Back when I bought my 3 season sleeping bag 3 brands were recommended, Western Mountaineering, Feathered Friends, and Montbell. My Montbell bag is about 20 years old and still does a good job. ...
My wife and I usually do at least a couple of multi-day, winter trips. We won't be this year as I'm getting over a broken leg.
My wife and I were A.T. boundary monitors here in NY for a out 15 years. When we gave it up we were quickly replaced by a younger man who took over our section. That should give is some hope
It was there in the summer of 2021
In the heat of summer I've used a simple fleece blanket in low land areas. If you're in the mountains you'll probably need something a bit warmer.
Are there any MLK plans for January 2021?
If not Kathy and. I will probably spend the weekend in Harriman S.P.
Until we got to Vermont my wife and I each used a fleece blanket. Back in the day I think we paid $20 per blanket.
This past spring the roof was off the pavilion, it looked like it was being rebuilt. The sink and shower were there and the water was turned on. I don't remember if there was a port-A-potti or...
I was hiking in NY's Harriman State Park yesterday and all the streams we passed had water and were running nicely
Let me suggest that you time your hike so that you are at the Ralph's Peak Hikers' Cabin shelter during the July weekend that the Ralph's Peak Hikers' Cabin Volunteer Club has it's annual work...
New York's Harriman State Park isn't too far, has plenty of parking, has legal camping, the AT runs through it, there's plenty of places to get water, there are shelters, and hundreds of miles of...
More layers of warm clothing can help too.
And if you already own appropriate clothes it's cheaper than buying more gear.
How cold are the conditions you are talking about?
Looks like Kathy and I are out for the group meet up.
Kathy has something she is committed to on Saturday and I have something on Sunday.
On another note, there was plenty of flowing water in the...
Turns out we didn't get there Saturday, life got in the way and we had to change plans.
I expect we'll get there today and do 1 night in the woods.
Something is better than nothing.
Kathy and I will be going to Harriman MLK weekend, arriving late Sat. and staying until Monday evening. We'll wait and see what next weekend brings.
It's good to hear AK is OK.
I always enjoy his company, wit and wisdom.
What we do on Friday night will be decided at the last minute taking into account what time we can leave home and what the weather is forecast to be.
There's a possability that Kathy and I might arrive very late Friday/ very early Saturday morning, who knows.
Maybe we'd just do both nights at West Mountain. We'll see.
Checking in to see what's planned.
Kathy and I should be able to make it at least for Saturday and the Sunday feast
You can get to the trail from New York City by bus or train. Check the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference web site for details.
You could push back you start date, to see how things work out, by doing a flip flop hike starting from Harper's Ferry or by going SOBO
My wife and I enjoyed a night at the Sterling Inn in Maine.
