I haven't hiked it lately but with all the days of rain we've had in the area lately, I wouldn't worry too much about water sources.
I know this is an old thread but I wanted to add some info in case someone finds this by googling. There's not much info online. I live close by and have never thought to do the trail until today. ...
There is no road access to Jarrard Gap. Yes, you can park at Lake Winfield Scott and walk the Jarrard Gap trail to the AT intersection. The distance is 1.2 miles. Here is a description of the...
45 degree bag should be ok. I always take a liner just in case temps drop.
I did it when I was in my 20s and in so-so shape and had no problem. Now. in my 30s, I'd probably find a better alternative.
I bought a Lightheart solo (without wedge) in March. So far it has been great.
That's great news! Though selfishly, I may miss my lonely BMT hikes one day.
Convenience Stores have them as well.
Burningtown Gap is also another option - 1.2 miles before Cold Springs. It depends upon how in shape you are for hiking to plan mileage. That trip will be much harder than Springer to Unicoi Gap....
September is a great time. Biggest concern will be water sources if we have another dry Summer.
Here's a thread on same subject I asked last August http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?75400-any-good-camping-spots-north-of-the-nantahala-outdoor-center
I've done it before several years ago. You really have to be in good shape to do it. This should help with water questions. ...
If the temps stay the same as they have been for the last few weeks, you should be ok.
Just got a lightheart tent. It's great.
I know I won't ever finish the entire trail and I don't care. I enjoy doing new sections when I can but I mostly do the GA sections again and again (among other good local trails) because they are...
Why not stay at Devil's Kitchen? It's a nice enough spot right by Justus Creek made just for tent camping.
My hiking partner did post some pics and make a profile and map of the section we did.

I did DRT from Rhodes Mtn to Blood Mtn a few weeks ago. It is a GREAT trail as long as the weather is cooler and there's no leaves on the trees. The steep ups and downs are like no other around here....
A month away, it's hard to say. I'd say anywhere from 30s/40s at night to 70s in daytime. It depends on if seasonable weather comes back. This year it wouldn't shock me if it was much warmer.
It's been alternating between cold one week and warm the next this year. Snow in April is possible. 70s is possible. Wait until lastest forecast before you leave. Always be prepared for cold nights...
I have lived and hiked in the area for a long time and I can say that temperature can vary greatly (and can have warm afternoon temps) despite what some angry people say. Wait until last possible...
Thanks - this will be very useful
Can be very hot and humid - pack light - be aware of water source conditions
Just hiked Hogpen to Unicoi over weekend. There is water flowing ok at the spring just before Blue Mountain shelter.
