Norovirus Warning for Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee

Update: The National Park Service has updated their GI Illness alert to a Norovirus Alert and expanded the alert areas along the Appalachian Trail to now include Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. While most people recover within 1-3 days, there have been serious cases on the A.T. requiring evacuation from the Trail and hospitalization.

In addition to the precautions outlined below, hikers should also avoid commonly touched surfaces such as other hiker’s gear, shelter logbooks, and privy door handles. Consider carrying bleach wipes to clean common surfaces before touching them, such as bear boxes/cables. Read the full alert here.

Please note that many backcountry water filters do not remove norovirus from water. See the CDC poster below for more information about proper backcountry water treatment.

It is with great sadness that I say that we lost another one of our early members of WhiteBlaze and the Appalachian Trail community. Richard “The Old Fhart” Bailey passed away last Friday after a long battle with cancer. I have a lot of good memories with him in the WhiteBlaze community, Appalachian Trail community, and the geocaching community.
I had the unforgettable experience of riding to Trail Days from Maine and back with him twice. It is an experience that I will never forget. For people that knew him, know what I am talking about. He was a very intelligent person. He knew things that most normal people would never know or care to know. That made him a great wealth of knowledge. If you needed an answer to something he probably knew it and if he did not know it, he would find out. I am at a loss for words here, he was a remarkable person and friend. Maybe a few will chime in and share a story or two that you have of The Old Fhart.

Here is a post from Ron Haven.

Attention A T Hikers. I sold the Jack Tarlin Hostel (Baltimore Jacks) and it will be permanently closed as of today (08/21/2021). I have sold all the motels in Franklin and Georgia. I do have other properties in Franklin I could use as a hostel if we decide later to open a hiker business. We may even buy a motel in Gatlinburg, TN. We are considering buying a house in Arizona or Texas to live in part time. Thank all of you for giving me the chance to serve each one of you throughout all these years and God Bless.

The day after Thanksgiving, Todd Gladfelter fell from his roof and broke 3 vertebrae in his neck. He was paralized over much of his body and now has a rod in his neck, with 9 screws holding it in place. “One day a thriving, strong, successful, agile chainsaw carving artist, the next day, someone has to feed him and wipe his chin,” is how his wife Cindy (AT ’78-79) described how his world changed in the blink of an eye.

Many in the A.T. community may know of Todd’s wife, author Cindy Ross, who met her future husband on his 1980 thru-hike after she had hiked the A.T. herself the two years before. (How they met is chronicled in the book about Cindy’s 2-year A.T. trek in A Woman’s Journey, which has been in print perhaps longer than any other A.T. book.) Together, they have hiked and biked many trails, including the Continental Divide Trail, which they traversed with their young children.
